How to Live Through Your Kitchen Remodel

Remodeling you kitchen is not only a wise investment, but it is an exciting prospect to envision what your new up to date kitchen will look like. After getting caught up in the design and planning, you will be anxious to enjoy the finished project. Before getting to that stage however, you will experience some inconveniences. The best way to prepare for this is to know what to expect so it won’t take you by surprise. You should sit down with your kitchen contractor to go over the schedule; including when specific work will be done, and what trades are going to be in your house. Preparation is the key component to living through a kitchen remodel with as little pain as possible.
Prep your kitchen
Depending on the extent of your kitchen remodel you can be without use of your kitchen for 1-2 weeks or more. Water will need to be turned off, gas and electricity halted, and the entire kitchen turned into a work zone. A few steps to take before the first contractor arrives follow:
• Remove all items from your kitchen. This includes anything on the counter, in any cabinet where work will be done, all food items, and anything hanging on the walls. This will save the contractor time.
• If you have pets and their food or water bowls are located in the kitchen, you will need to relocate them. Ideally, you should do this at least a week in advance for your pets to become used to the change.
Communicate with your contractor
Keep up open communication with your kitchen contractor. This way he can let you know of any changes to the schedule or delays in supplies. Likewise, if you have a change in schedule he can accommodate it. There may be specific needs your contractor has to help the job run smoothly. Try and accommodate these to the best of your abilities and everyone will be happy. Keeping a good rapport with your kitchen contractor is essential to a successful kitchen remodel.
• Make alternate arrangements
For the period when your kitchen is completely out of service you should be prepared with an alternate plan for storing your food and feeding your family. You should let your food supplies run low prior to when your kitchen is inoperable. You will have less food to make alternate arrangements for. Consider a secondary fridge and freezer you may have in your garage for storage of the remaining items.
For eating purpose, if you have friends or family nearby that can accommodate you with little inconvenience that will be the most inexpensive solution. Another alternative is to check into a hotel room equipped with a kitchenette during that timeframe. Simply eating all of your meals out that you normally prepare in your kitchen could also be an answer. Depending on the needs of your family, you may move a portable microwave into another room in your home and warm meals that way.
Let your contractor know your intentions
What ever alternate plan you decide to implement you should share this with your kitchen contractor up front. This will eliminate any confusion on your contractor’s behalf and he can schedule accordingly. Sometimes a contractor will work long hours trying to leave you with some usable areas of your kitchen for the evening. This can lead to mistakes or less than optimal quality. You can relieve some of this pressure by making it clear you have alternate plans for eating and/or living elsewhere throughout the kitchen remodel.
In closing
This may all sound like a big inconvenience to you and your household, but the end result will be worth it. Just envision you and your family preparing a healthy meal on gleaming new countertop with modern appliances and the road it takes to get there doesn’t seem so long and bumpy. Your kitchen contractor will work with you to ensure the kitchen remodeling is as smooth as possible and you are inconvenienced as little as you can be.
